Employing People with Disabilities
Donating a wheelchair is just the beginning. People with disabilities, like everyone else, should have the opportunity to get out of their house, be active and become independent. We employ people with disabilities to give them income, to help them support their families and to help them have a better quality of life. Dr. David Werner, a famous physician and advocate for people with disabilities, wrote a book, "Nothing About Us Without Us". It is imperative to include Mexican people with disabilities in every aspect of what we do - in planning, in teaching and in leadership.
We have a team of people, with and without disabilities, who regularly work with us to refurbish wheelchairs anddonate them. They answer the phone, organize the donations, contact the community governments and help establish our day-to-day policies. We believe in a holistic approach. First the wheelchair, then some training on using their wheelchair, helping them develop confidence and independence, an accessible home, education, employment, and whatever else we can help them with to have a successful life. Our long-term goal is to build a Life-Rehabilitation Center, where people with disabilities can learn how to use their wheelchairs, be independent, live a successful, fulfilling, God-filled life.
